Five Towns College students packed the Downbeat this week for the opening ceremony of the annual Hall Olympics, a spirited campus tradition that takes place each fall semester, bringing dorm residents together through friendly rivalry. The kickoff event marked the start of several weeks of games and challenges where residence halls compete for the ultimate prize: a trophy and a catered meal from a local restaurant.

Each hall showcased its creativity with a decorated banner reflecting its theme. Melody Hall drew inspiration from Avatar: The Last Airbender, transforming its space into a world of elements.

“Our theme for our building was Avatar, and the different hallways are split up into the different nations,” said Tahina Petion, a Film & Television major. “We did the four columns to represent each element, and yeah, kept it cute.”

For many students, the Hall Olympics are more than just a series of contests; they’re a chance to unwind, connect, and show dorm pride. “I’m pretty excited for the whole Olympics,” said Mass Comm student Nature Langhorne. “I think they’ll be pretty cool this time.” When asked which one they’re most excited about, Langhorne added, “the billiards tournament.”

For Director of Student Activities Lindsay Meakem, the Hall Olympics play a significant role in strengthening campus life. “I think Hall Olympics is a really important aspect of our programming here because it unites the residents of the campus,” Meakem said. “It brings out people who maybe are stuck in their dorms and don’t really know what to do, and helps them meet others both within their own dorm and in the other dorms. It unites the campus in that way, along with just providing more fun on campus.”

As the competitions begin, students are gearing up for a season of teamwork, creativity, and friendly competition, all in the name of campus pride.

Upcoming Hall Olympics events include dodgeball, a billiards tournament, a spaghetti tower building contest, and trivia.

The next event, dodgeball, will take place on Oct. 9 from 7–8:30 p.m. in the Sound Arena.
