The importance of public-access TV and how community-driven media has shifted

With the rise of social media, public-access television has adapted to meet the needs of the community.

Public-access television was created in the United States from 1969-1971 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  Since its inception, public-access television became known for giving a voice to those who had something to say. Whether they wanted to talk about their favorite movies, or address issues in their community, public access was the platform that people could rely on.

But as technology has shifted and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has been shut down by the Trump Administration, the fight for public access has been an ongoing battle.

Many stations have shut down, while others have had to adapt to the times.

North Shore TV Executive Producer Erica Bradley shared insight on the current state and role of public television.
