Five Towns College community raises money for breast cancer at Jones Beach Walk

Five Towns College’s colors turned pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The college raised awareness for the cause all month, culminating in the community participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach on October 20th. This year, the Five Towns team raised $3,389 for the American Cancer Society (ACS). A bus was provided for students to attend the event together.
The Five Towns College community is dedicated to supporting this cause. “Many people either deal with breast cancer or know someone who is or was. So for students, this cause is very dear to them. As a college, it’s good that we’re able to find a way to facilitate this act of giving back to develop a more socially involved community,” said FTC Area Director Sol Mabry.
Students who participated in this event believe in making a difference. “It was meaningful because each year it is a wonderful way to spread awareness about breast cancer and research with fellow peers from the FTC campus community,” said Mass Communions major Jeff Kramer.
Throughout the month of October, tables were set up in the Upbeat with QR codes, making it easy for the FTC community to donate money to the American Cancer Society. Students also showed support by wearing pink on Wednesdays and spreading awareness about the team’s efforts. Limited-edition pink FTC baseball caps were given as gifts to team members who joined the walk.
“The students enjoyed the event. It was a great way to connect with the community of Long Island. Many of the students walked with friends, visited different vendors and stalls, and enjoyed the music at the event. Overall, it was a nice way to spend a Sunday,” said Mabry.
