It’s been a long day at the Sound Stream with Vinylthon, station managers Andre and Jodi join Mass Comm senior Daniel Garcia for the final block, ending at midnight.
According to Andre Doughty, the night was a success.” I think it was a good school initiative, and I think everyone who participated really saw the value in it,” said Doughty. “So, as a way to gather interest across the school, with people who may not always be interested or involved in the soundstream, I think it was a good event. And so much so that people are interested in going for the 24 hours, so I think it is a net win for us.”

For the last student set of the night, Film & TV major Joey Cicchelli is playing his favorite selections from Steely Dan and Queen. “I’m a big old school guy. I really have a huge love for early 70s music, and that’s sort of a jazz-rock style. The second I heard that I could hop on a vinyl station and this vinyl thaw, I was like the first person to respond.”

8:47 pm
It was a busy half hour for me, getting to do another small set with some of my favorites, including Dolly Parton, Jimmy Buffett, and Johnny Cash. Station manager Jodi Vale is on now, playing some of her favorite Stevie Wonder.
7:19 PM
Film & TV major Dan Albert is this hour’s disk jockey. “My hour is going to be more so, just stuff that I like. So I was gonna start with, like, more rock stuff, like Queens of the Stone Age. Franz Ferdinand, Muse. And then I’m gonna kind of just drift towards more, so like synth wave stuff. So, like, the midnight and all that stuff. is gonna be real good,” he said. “I just like music. I like talking about, like sharing it. So I just wanted an excuse to try that.”
6:12 PM
On the Sound Stream now is Mass Comm senior Jace DeMarco, taking listeners through Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon. “The Dark Side of the Moon is such an achievement in the history of rock, both when it comes to the music and the production,” DeMarco said. “Getting to dissect it track-by-track is the only way I can do such a legendary album justice.”
5:10 PM
Now up is Mass Comm student Kevin Phelan, who’s going back with some of his picks. “So the theme of my hour, for the most part, is gonna be 2010’s indie pop. I’m looking forward to the sounds of the likes of Mac DeMarco, Peach Pit, and hers. And I’m gonna sprinkle in maybe some emo songs in there. I have an origami angel record. Some Beatles, I plan on playing, and yeah, it’s gonna be pretty much all over the place.”

4:28 PM
The fifth show of the day is selections from staff and students, including Mass Comm professor Mike Peters, and Mass Comm students David Frith and Adrian Kartalozi.
“This hour is dedicated to FTC students and faculty who didn’t want to be on air — or couldn’t —but wanted to participate in Vinylthon. It’s selections from the dweebiest people we know at the FTC Sound Stream,” said station manager Jodi Vale.
3:07 PM
Mass Comm student Brian Klukosky just finished his set that included songs from The Beach Boys and Steely Dan. “I just wanted to come and play, like, as much of my collections as I can. I have been collecting for a while, and I have a huge collection…And we had a lot of really cool stuff. You know, I went, I had some Steely Dan, which I really love.”
Next up is fellow Mass Comm student Eric Guli, who’s most excited to play the band Lobsterfight. “They’re a small emo band from Pueblo, Colorado. I found them on Bandcamp my freshman year of college at Fredonia. I first fell in love with their second album, Sun Soaking. They’re incredible!!! Everyone give them a listen!”
2:30 PM
I was busy this past hour with my own set for Vinylthon, “Unknown, Unpopular and Underground,” showing off some of my favorite music that you might not have heard of, including selections from one of my favorite bands, Boys Go To Jupiter.
12:15 PM
Vinylthon has kicked off with its first block on the FTC Sound Stream, hosted by station manager Andre Doughty. “For the first hour at least, I will be on air playing a variety of selections, letting people know what’s in store throughout the rest of the day. And I’m talking about some students to see what is coming down the line, and the schedule for them, they’re specific shows and what they’re planning to play on them.”
