Five Towns College’s Women’s Basketball season continues in the 2024 USCAA Division II National Tournament in Richmond, Virginia. In today’s matchup, the 9th-ranked Sound will take on 8th-seeded Southern Maine Community College. Tipoff is at 11 AM at the Virginia State University Multi-Purpose Center.

Throughout the season, Head Coach Corey Jacques started every practice with a quote of the day to motivate his team. Jacques had an important reminder for them when heading into the national tournament, saying, “Every storm that comes into your life does not mean to discomfort you. Some are made to clear your path.” Jacques is proud of his team’s season and believes in their chances to win the championship.

Five Towns took home their second HVIAC championship last weekend, beating Berkeley College 75 – 51 in the Sound Arena. The team was also regular season champions with a record of 12-6, averaging 71.1 points per game. Many players and the coaching staff received HVIAC end-of-season awards. Senior Jordan Tobin and Freshman Talaya Guirantes are 6th and 7th, respectively, in points per game in the USCAA national ranking.

Guard Judith Girones, who scored a game-high 26 points in the HVIAC Championship, doesn’t mind being underestimated by opponents. “So, I think our goal is to be there and just prove that we deserve a spot, and who knows, maybe win more than other people expect,” said Girones.

The college community is excited about this national tournament run. Five Towns Men’s Basketball Guard Hunter Waldman talked about his support for the team. “You know, all year, I’ve come into the gym and seen them working hard every single day. So, for that team, it means a lot, and it’s well-deserved.”

Five Towns College students are invited to the Downbeat for a USCAA watch party at 11 AM. If you’re unable to attend, follow @fivetowns_sound on Instagram to stay up to date on the Sound’s results. Go Sound!
