Five Towns College comes together to fight breast cancer

By Max Caliendo.

With 321,910 new cases projected for 2026, one of the most prevalent forms of cancer in the country today is breast cancer, and every October we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in order to raise awareness. Now that October has arrived, the students at Five Towns College are organizing to help the effort to fight back against breast cancer.

For some students at Five Towns, such as Mass Communications major Dylan Collado, this fight is personal. “My mom has had breast cancer, and cancer has run in my family, so like, doing things like this walk is something I always do. I always do the breast cancer walks, and I think it’s important to attend, because cancer goes through a lot of families.”

Five Towns College’s effort began by raising awareness on campus. Alongside emails that have been sent out throughout the month, there was also an information table erected in the upbeat on October 13th during Common Hour where people could make donations to the American Cancer Society.

Another part of Five Towns’ contribution to the fight against breast cancer is the college’s participation in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk at Jones Beach on Sunday, October 18th. A team of students attends and participates, led by Director of Student Activities Lindsey Meakem.  “The walk is a really fun event; I went last year. It’s at Jones Beach, and there’s many tables of different companies supporting the cause, located on the grassy area and the boardwalk of Jones Beach… I think it’s about three miles or something like that, (the) walk.”

Five Towns students who register for the team and join the walk on Sunday, October 18th will earn five hours of Community Service towards their total.  Five Towns will provide a bus to transport students to and from the College for the walk. Details regarding the bus will be sent to all registered team members in advance of Sunday, October 18.
