The Upbeat Cafe was turned into a movie theater on the evening of May 1st with the Student Government Association’s (SGA) showing of the 2001 hit film Shrek.

Students gathered in The Upbeat where a projector and speakers were set up to show the film. Beanbags were brought in to create a more relaxed and casual environment. Soon after the students arrived, the lights dimmed, and the movie started as the air filled with the scent of fresh popcorn.

As the film played, attendees pointed out their favorite lines, jokes, and scenes; singing along whenever a song started to play. When the ‘Hallelujah’ song was performed, students waved their phone flashlights as if they were at a concert.

The always-popular film franchise had renewed interest after Shrek 2 came back in theatres in April for a weeklong-limited run.

Yet not all attendees of movie night were Shrek fanatics. The event was SGA President Jeff Kramer’s first time seeing the movie. “It was quite the experience indeed. I was missing out for twenty-one years of my life. This was a lot of fun. I’ve seen clips from Shrek, and I know a lot of the songs just because it’s popular in pop culture. This is the first time I really remember sitting down and watching it,” said Kramer.

SGA works tirelessly behind the scenes to bring these fun events to Five Towns College. Assistant Dean for Campus Life Michael Cavalli helped put together the event. “This was actually a pretty fun one because this one really came organically out of the Student Government Association Executive Officers, which is my favorite type of program. I find that the best programs are the ones that are driven by our students.”

This simple and fun movie night was just what students needed to bond and relax as they head into finals. As Shrek said, “You know, Donkey, sometimes things are more than they appear.”
