With election season right around the corner, non-profit organizations like the League of Women Voters encourage America’s youth to learn about voting and participate in elections.  The LWV hosted a table in the Upbeat on Thursday, Oct. 1st, to promote voter registration to Five Towns College students and answer questions on the voting process.

For some Five Towns students, this may be the first election in which they are eligible to vote.   “…I never really thought about voting; I thought it was mainly for the adults,” said Audio major Torien Davis.

This is why the LWV makes their rounds to places like Five Towns College. “We think it’s very important to come, especially to colleges and high schools, because in our country, the percentage of age brackets that vote- it’s the older people that vote most often, and one of the lowest turnouts is young people, like 18 to 30. So, we feel it’s so important to reach out to these young people because it’s their future,” said LWV member Deborah Cosher.

FTC students chatted with LWV members about how to register and their role in the democratic process.  “I think that voting is very important, especially for this younger generation. Voting is how people can get their voice out there and let people know what they think about the policies in place in our government and which ones we want to change, which ones we want to keep,” said  Mass Comm major Christopher Eliopoulos.

Five Towns College has a multifaceted relationship with the League of Women Voters.  This year, the college co-hosted a Constitution Day event on Sept. 16th with the LWV, where students could register to vote.   And once again, Five Towns Mass Comm students voiced radio PSA’s for the LWV.

Election Day is on Tues. November 3rd.
