Five Towns College welcomed its incoming class for New Student Orientation on Tuesday, September 5th. Attendees were excited to get the semester started. Film & Television major Syria Johnson talked about her decision to attend FTC. “I came here as a transfer student. I wanted to be in a smaller, more detailed school when it came to my major.”
Students are ready to be part of this creative college. “I came here for film and video because I honestly want to make connections with people and make short films. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to make films and entertain people. I even have a YouTube channel,” said Film & Television major Brandon Edwards.
A full day of activities was planned for students to get ready for the first day of classes. After a continental breakfast, students headed to the PAC to hear inspirational words from new Provost Dr. Marsha Pollard as well as campus leadership. Group sessions included seminars on technology, community standards, and academic support services.
“I thought orientation was very knowledgeable. I definitely got a lot of information,” said Music Performance major Triniti Hymes.
Orientation Leader Patrick DePace talked about the day’s schedule. “Everything planned for the new students is to keep them engaged and make sure they have fun. We also want to make sure they are familiar with the policies and procedures on campus and make sure they know where to go if they need anything.”
Students appreciated their enthusiastic leaders. “The orientation leaders have been super funny. They’ve been really chill to hang out with. It’s been a good experience,” said Aidan McDermott, a Business Management major.
At lunchtime, students met their Department Chairs and Professors in the Upbeat Cafe. Liberal Arts and Sciences Chair Dr. Jennifer Dardzinski highlighted the importance of her department. “Liberal Arts is the core of all learning, so students need to be well-rounded. They need to know how to read, write, and think critically, and those courses are geared towards that.”
After lunch, the students played the popular college trivia show, THINKFAST, with host TjohnE.
“It’s important to plan a fun day because sometimes we can be giving out a lot of information all at once. The orientation leaders really try to make them motivated to indulge in the experience,” said Student Activities Coordinator Natalie Allouche.
The day concluded with closing remarks from FTC President Dr. David Cohen and a dessert reception.
Classes begin today, Wednesday, September 6th.
