The Downbeat turned into a disco club on September 16th with the Silent Disco dance. This event returned from the Fall 2023 semester and like last time, the night was a hit. “I think it’s really fun. I was here last year and I’m having a good time,” said Tahina Petion, a Film and TV student.

How does one dance at a Silent Disco?

Students are given wireless headphones and can pick between two channels to listen to, with each channel being controlled by a different DJ.  Their musical choice is represented by the headphones glowing either red or blue. Attendants can also control the volume of the music so it’s never too quiet or loud for a single individual.

The Silent Disco is a concept that might seem strange to anyone who only hears about it but the students who attended liked the fact that it was a customizable and fun experience where everyone could be as comfortable as possible.

To add to the evening’s ambiance, the Downbeats lights dimmed and neon lights turned on as dancers crowded the floor. With the choice of two music channels, there was always something for everyone to listen to.  Modern hits were played but some dance classics like The Cupid Shuffle made their way into the mix.

With the headphones showing which channel you were on, students knew when to change over to either red or blue when the dance floor lit up with a particular color. However, with both channels packed with good tunes, dancers switched back and forth all night and were unable to pick their favorite color. “That’s tough because there’s so many good channels. I don’t know. I’m not sure,” said Music major Triniti Hymes.

Weeks of Welcome (WOW) events continue tonight with the much-anticipated Casino Night from 6-10 pm in the Upbeat Cafe.
