FTC Career Services hosts internship panel connecting students with industry professionals
By Grace Bonamico
Five Towns College Career Services hosted a virtual panel during Common Hour on Oct. 28, giving students the chance to learn about internships directly from industry employers.
Representatives from several companies participated, including Newsday, Love Wins Productions, Headz Up Digital, Connoisseur Media Long Island, and others. Each employer introduced themselves and their company, sharing how they began their careers and what they look for in interns. Students were then able to ask questions and engage with the panelists.
Amanda Smith, a video editor at Lorraine Gregory Communications, spoke about how her own journey began as an intern at the same company where she now works full-time. Others shared similar experiences. “I am a product of internships,” said Ana Genao of Eventura Services. “As an intern, I was able to learn more,” she added, explaining how the opportunity allowed her to wear many different hats.
In addition to discussing what they seek in potential interns, the speakers offered broader advice for career and personal growth. “Be open to all opportunities,” said Mike Sangiamo of Connoisseur Media. “When the opportunity comes, say yes.”
Career Services Director Krysti O’Rourke noted the importance of this career panel format. “The employers’ tips and advice for success were the ‘cherries on the cake,’ O’Rourke said. “Students involved asked some excellent questions. Career Services plans to host more of these webinars so students can hear “first hand“ from employers on how their internships work.”
It’s never too early for students to begin thinking about career preparation and strategy. First-year Mass Comm student Christian Garrido gained valuable information from the event, saying, “A lot of the employers did not initially get into the position they were into by following one straight path. They all started as interns in one position; however, they slowly expanded into a variety of positions until they found their way to what they work in now.”
FTC students should keep an eye out for announcements of future webinars and are always encouraged to visit Career Services.
